Unranked 14-year-old Portuguese phenomenon bounced past American veteran player Meghann Shaughnessy in three sets. The Portuguese standout dropped the first set but went on to win in the third set tiebreak!
Brito, playing her first WTA match stayed on serve with Shaughnessy until 2-2 in the first set, when the American raised the level and went ahead 4-2, and eventually 6-3 to pocket the first set. But Michelle Brito was far from sunk, she blazed through the second set at the expense of just 2 games, to win it 6-2. In the deciding set, the younger player was expected to surrender due to lack of stamina, but it was not to be.
In the third set, after trading breaks early on, players went with serve until the end of the set, with Larcher de Brito having to serve for the match at both 5-4 and 6-5. At 5-4 she served the 5-5 at love and at 6-5 Brito dropped just one point. In the tiebrek Shaughnessy crumbled and the 14-year-old from Estoril stood tallest, racing to a 6-0 lead, and 6 match points! Shaughnessy recovered back to 3-6 but in the end the young Portuguese, who trains at the Bollettieri Academy, was too strong. She finished it right there, final score: 3-6; 6-2; 7-6(3). Larcher de Brito finished the match with one ace and ten double-faults against 7 aces and 3 double-faults from her opponent. She also saved 63% of breakpoints against her (5/8).
This week Larcher de Brito is breaking several Portuguese records. First, she is the first Portuguese to appear in the main draw of a Tier I tournament. Then, she became the first player to appear in the second round of a Tier I tournament, and finally she holds the record among Portuguese players of highest ranked players beaten. She is also expected to be inside the top 500 as soon as she gets a ranking. This means she will jump to second ranked Portuguse right away, only behind top 250 player Frederica Piedade.
Next up for the talented Portuguese is last week's Indian Wells champion Daniela Hantuchova. Naturally these players have never met, and for Michelle it will be just another big match where she has nothing to lose.
Apparently Portugal will soon be spottable in the tennis map.
