« Michelle Larcher de Brito, a fourteen-year old up-and-coming tennis star, made her professional debut this week at the Dow Corning Tennis Classic in Midland, Michigan. She faced Kristina Brandi, a tour veteran, in the first round. After Larcher de Brito won the first set 6-4, she lost the second 6-2, and battled Brandi in the third before losing 7-5. Despite the loss she played extremely well, and earned the Larry Reed Most Promising Newcomer Award.
Larcher de Brito has been at the Academy working hard with me for some time, and made her mark in 2005 by winning the Girls 16’s at the Eddie Herr International Tennis Championships at the age of 12. She continued her stellar play by winning the USTA International Grass Court title in Philadelphia in June of 2006, won a singles title in South Carolina a couple of months later, and reached quarterfinals of the Eddie Herr in November. Mind you, these were all Girls 18s events she was entering and winning as a 13 year old!
She is the top ranked 8th grader in the country by Tennisrecruiting.net, and at #59 she is the youngest ranked junior in the Top-100 in the world by the International Tennis Federation. She is not done though, she wants to be the #1 ranked player in the world, and is definitely on my list of players to watch in the near future!
Congratulations to Michelle and her family, keep up the great work because the entire Academy is rooting for you! »

The former CEO of the Dow Corning Corporation, avid tennis player, and USTA Umpire, Larry Reed was instrumental in the growth and development of the Dow Corning Challenger. This memorial award recognizes the players who have evidenced outstanding promise early in their professional career at the Dow Corning/USTA Women's Challenger. Michelle caminha a passos largos para uma extraodinária carreira no ténis profissional e é, para todos nós, muito gratificante, verificar que estamos a acompanhar a sua carreira desde do inicio.
Parabéns Michelle, mais uma vez.
